but it surely will change the world for that one dog."

Update: Shelbie is housebroken, loves to be by your side, loves to be petted , get along with other dogs
------------------------------------------------

"SHELBIE"  is an 11 yr old, spayed female collie/sheltie mix weighing 60 lbs. She was owner surrendered b/c they didn't have time for her. She was their dog for her entire 11 yrs. She was kept largely outside and may not be totally housebroken.

She is somewhat timid around other dogs but has lived with cats before and is fine with them. She likes going for walks and this should help with getting off those extra lbs she needs to lose. She is already on a reducing diet to get her into top shape.

We think she would be fine with well behaved children. She is very gentle but somewhat timid. I think she would be scared to death of loud children climbing on her.

"HUEY" - Huey is 7 yrs old, neutered and up to date with his shots.   He is friendly, loves treats, good with other dogs and will do fine with well behaved children over 6 yr .  His Daddy who dearly loved him passed away very suddenly. Huey is waiting for a very loving person to give him a home.

Please contact Barb about Huey.

Older Dogs Are Great Too
By Dean Burton
The old adage that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" has given older
dogs a bad rap for years, and it is entirely untrue. Of course, like people,
older dogs have some habits and customs that may take some time to work out,
but they can certainly still learn. Adult dogs are often overlooked when
people are searching for dogs for sale. Instead, most people are only looking for
puppies for sale, while there are some really great advantages to adopting an
adult dog, which many people fail to consider.

Of course everyone loves puppies, which is why puppies for sale move so
quickly, whether that be from shelters, rescues, or online petfinder resources.
Those cute little bundles of joy are just irresistible, but what many adopting
parents forget to consider, is the fact that this stage will only last a number of
months before the puppy becomes an adolescent. Adolescence is that
experimental high-energy stage that causes many dogs to find themselves up for
adoption, because the patience of many dog owners is tested too far. If you do
not have the time, energy, and patience to train an adolescent dog, then a
puppy might not be the best scenario for you.

There are an abundance of adult dogs that have difficulty finding new homes.
Some people think that adult dogs for adoption must have some type of
behavior disorder, which is also untrue. Yes, some dogs may have a difficult
behavior issue, but the majority of dogs in this situation were put there by
irresponsible ownership. Perhaps the owner just didn't have time any more, or
there was a divorce, new child, or relocation. There are so many reasons people
get rid of their dogs. Any pet will take some time and effort, but older dogs
usually have better attention spans as well as bladder control. With older
dogs, training should be fun, while firm and fair. As long as the training is
consistent and frequent, they will have no problem catching.

Another great thing about looking for adult dogs for sale is that you already
know how big they are, what their coat is like, and some of their breed
personality. There are simply fewer unknowns, and depending on your special
living circumstances and family situation, this might be the best way to find the
perfect K9 companion. There are so many older dogs that need a good home, and
adopting one is something to think about.

RESCUE

Rescue is an important part of any breed club. Many of our members at sometime have adopted a rescue dog/s or on their own initiative or with help from HSSC or other rescues, have fostered shelties. Harrisburg SSC's rescue program works with other rescue groups in our area by sometimes fostering rescues, transporting rescues and also by giving monetary donations to other rescue groups. Our rescue coordinator works as a contact to help people find the Sheltie Rescue group that can assist them, if we cannot personally help them. We sometimes may feature an available rescue on this page.

Each year at our Specialty show, we hold a raffle for rescue. Items are donated by our members, the public and businesses. All raffle proceeds are used for rescue.

  • Rescue
    So, what does Rescue do?
-Basically, dogs are "rescued" from situations beyond the dogs control.  Most rescue is "owner turn-in" where the owner doesn't have the time, ability, is moving, having a baby, or has some other reason that they can no longer care for the dog. Some dogs coming in to rescue are strays, others may be abused (although this is not common). Strays and abused dogs generally require more time and patience and will only be placed in a permanent home when all or most of their "issues" are resolved.
-The dogs are rehabilitated in to physical and mental health before being placed into new homes.

  • How Do I Adopt or Make A Donation to Rescue?
    - If you would like to adopt a rescue, foster or donate to rescue, you will find information below that will direct you to our rescue coordinator or a rescue in your area.
